Waterproofing
Both waterproofing and conditioning products repel water when they are applied to leather boots, but they work differently.
Waterproof
Products, such as Danner Waterproofing Spray and Gel, repel water by sitting on the surface of the material rather than being absorbed.
Waterproofing Spray works for all material types and is the best choice for footwear with both leather and textile materials.
Best for: Quick and easy application
Use on: All types of leather, fabric, and textile footwear
Use when: Wearing footwear in wet conditions
Frequency: Every day for heavy use, every few weeks for moderate use, as needed for light use
Best for: Longest lasting protection
Use on: Full-grain leather footwear only
Use when: Wearing footwear in wet conditions

Condition
Products, such as dressing and wax, contain oils that are absorbed by leather. In addition to keeping your leather healthy and supple, the oils offer natural water repellency.
If your boots are made with suede or nubuck leather, we make a product just for you. It does double duty as both a waterproofing and conditioning tool.
Best for: Reviving & waterproofing worn or dry footwear
Use on: Suede and nubuck leather footwear, any color
Use when: Wearing footwear in wet conditions, leather begins to look worn or dry
Frequency: Every day for heavy use, every few weeks for moderate use, as needed for light use

Leather ConditionersThe only way to have a fully waterproof pair of boots is to purchase one with a waterproof liner, such as GORE-TEX or Danner Dry. The majority of our footwear is built with one of these waterproof liners. Boots with waterproof liners, such as GORE-TEX or Danner Dry, can benefit from using waterproofing products.

How Waterproof Liners Work
The waterproof liner is a layer below the outermost material of your footwear (usually leather or textile). Danner Dry and GORE-TEX work similarly in that they keep water from penetrating into the interior of your boots, keeping your feet dry.
They are also breathable by letting moisture and sweat vapor from your feet exit. They work best when the outside temperatures are lower than inside your boots because the temperature differential pulls moisture from the warmer, interior of the boot to the outside, colder air.
How Waterproofing Products Work with Waterproof Liners
Waterproof liners work best when the outer material of your boots are clean, conditioned, and waterproofed so moisture from your feet can escape through the exterior footwear material.
Keeping your footwear clean allows the pores of the material to breath. Likewise, keeping leather conditioned and supple also allows the pores of the leather to breathe freely.
Using waterproofing products on the exterior of your footwear keeps the upper materials dry as well, providing an additional layer of protection from the elements.
If you notice your waterproof boots look wet and saturated on the exterior (for example, the leather is wet) the GORE-TEX or Danner Dry waterproof liner will still keep your feet dry.
